Pondering the Affordable Care Act: Expanded Medicaid

Part of the ACA included the potential for all states to expand their Medicaid coverage for patients. Not all states have chosen to do so. California did expand Medicaid (Medi-cal in CA). This means that folks who were previously not eligible are now eligible. It is based on poverty/income guidelines, available on the state Medicaid site.

Children are also eligible for programs that they may not have been able to participate in before. Most states that have expanded Medicaid have done so using criteria above the federal minimums for income, family size and other criteria. This is a win-win for access to care for many patients. All patients should be encouraged to sign up for their state program, no matter what state they live in. Check out the links below to learn more, so you can discuss with patients.
